19.50 Updated from 19.10 - Channel 4 is reporting that a Metropolitan police officer who appeared on Crimewatch, Dave Cook, was put under surveillence by the News of the World while investigating the 1987 murder of Daniel Morgan, a private investigator.
They report that News of the World were investigating whether Cook was having an affair with DC Jackie Haynes, a Crimewatch regular who was in fact his wife.
Channel 4 report that suspects being investigated by Cook included private investigators with links to News of the World.
They say that the Metropolitan police became aware of this and met with Rebekah Brooks in 2002.
News International have issued a statement to Channel 4 in response to the claims. They said they were not previously aware of claims and will investigate regarding the alleged meeting between Rebekah Brooks & police, but they cannot confirm or deny that any meeting took place.
Channel 4 say that Mr Cook was informed two months ago about documentation regarding the surveillence obtained by police from Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator jailed for phone hacking in 2007.
Mr Cook is said to be considering legal action against News International.
Mr Morgan’s brother, Alistair Morgan, who often spoke to Det Sup Cook, told Channel 4 News:
Quote He told me about it then but I didn’t realise who the newspaper was at that point. I learned about the surveillance and then I learned that it was the News of the World carrying out the surveillance.
Dave told me that he was taking his dog out for a walk one evening and he noticed a van parked in an odd location. Obviously it aroused his suspicions. The following morning, he noticed that he was being followed.
